About Bawaleshie
La Bawaleshie is a Ga community in the Ayawaso constituency located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It is surrounded by other settlements such as American House, Madina and Okponglo. The La-Bawaleshie community is approximately 1.7 kilometres away from the University of Ghana. La- Bawaleshie is one the Ga communities that was formed after some people migrated from the main La settlement in Accra, now known as Labadi, to their present location. The aim of migration at the time was to search for land to farm. The first family to settle there was the “Kotey” family, who settled as farmers. The name ‘Bawaleshie’ is coined from Ga words ‘Bawale’ which is the name of a tree or a deity and ‘shie’ which means ‘under’ thus Bawaleshie means “under the Bawale”.
